Hotel Alma Barcelona exhibits two of Victoria de los Ángeles’ Manon dresses

Hotel Alma Barcelona is currently hosting a unique exhibition dedicated to soprano Victoria de los Ángeles, focusing on two original dresses worn by the artist in Jules Massenet’s opera Manon.

Victoria de los Ángeles as Manon at the Liceu in 1967.

The pieces, belonging to the Victoria de los Ángeles Foundation on deposit at the Museu de les Arts Escèniques of the Institut del Teatre, are part of the stage costumes the singer used during her international career, in which she performed this role on major stages throughout the fifties and sixties. Of particular note is a green silk brocade dress she wore in her last staged opera at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in 1967, marking the beginning of an absence there that lasted until 1992.

The exhibition offers an exceptional opportunity to get closer to the most tangible dimension of the Barcelona soprano’s artistic legacy. The dresses not only reflect the aesthetics of mid-20th-century opera but also the importance of costume in character building during an era when great performers kept their own stage pieces.

Set in an intimate space like Hotel Alma, the exhibition proposes a dialogue between music, memory, and heritage, evoking the theatrical world of Manon and the interpretative elegance that characterized Victoria de los Ángeles. The initiative is part of the activities to disseminate and preserve the artist’s legacy, coinciding with growing international interest in her figure.
